If every filmmaker’s work is an extension of his personality, then Rajesh’s work says a simple story about him. At the heart of it, he is a storyteller that sees the funny side of things. If there is anything worth telling straight, he will twist it. An art he believes that requires sincere and constant study of human beings.
Born and brought up in the suburbs of Mumbai, his grounding in performing arts comes from amateur theatre while at college and a healthy diet of B-grade movies. A self-taught musician with a keen interest in theatre and lots of glib talk, advertising seemed like a quick buck! Naturally, any coconut hair oil applying, curd rice-eating Iyer parent wasn’t letting him break the family tradition of being an accountant! Pontificating astrologers were consultedThe council of elders pow-wowed. Votes of the family doctor, the launderer, temple priest, the occasional sadhya cook too were taken into account.And so, ridiculous as it may seem, he did a trade with his folks – an MBA in Advertising and Communications from NMIMS, Mumbai for a life of PPMs.
Rajesh worked in advertising as a copywriter from 1995 to 1999 with agencies such as Contract Advertising, Enterprise Nexus, and Ogilvy & Mather. Pure avarice took him to Channel [V] as a writer. A simple twist of fate occurred on a set and an accidental director was born. After a couple of years in some more music channels and a few awards, Rajesh made a foray into the direction in advertising in the year 2002.Since then he has directed over 500 advertising films for brands that include Pepsi, Coca Cola, Virgin Mobile, Bingo – ITC, MTV, Mentos, IPL, Vodafone, Center Fresh, Center Fruit, OLX, Naukri.com, Lenovo, MonsterJobs.com, Tata Motors, Bajaj Motorcycles, Amaron, Marico, Cadburys, KBC, KFC. Some of them are even good!
